Our very Christian faith is based upon the promise of that which is to come, the new kingdom ruled by Christ and created by God. Jurgen Moltmann in "The Theology of Hope" states that "...Christianity is eschatology, is hope, forward looking and forward moving, and therefore also revolutionizing and transforming the present." (p. 16) We are forever moving forward toward that new kingdom, albeit in the midst of the ashes of grief, disappointment, sorrow, humiliation, and human suffering. But is with these ashes on our very foreheads that we are reminded that we, too, must move forward, that we, indeed, are but servant creatures of God, and that we are not God. And so the ashes on our foreheads are "brandings', if you will, that set us apart in that they signify our looking to the future rather than dwelling in the past or the present.

Signed,
Bill Lucas (wmslucas@comcast.net)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
